Black History IS Tap History:
Tap Dance is is a cultural product of Black experience. While we experience it as a joyful form of dance, it may not have been so for the original dancers. The joy was communication and expression to escape a white supremacist society. The most honoured and important figures in Tap Dance and their family/friends lived in a society that imposed on them laws, policies, harrassment and assults intended to disempower and impoverish Black people. The outcomes of these policies are what we live with today. Tap dancing exists in this context. Every day our feet hit the floor, we are thankful to the dancers who came before us.
